Periodontics is a specialty in dentistry that focuses on the treatment of the periodontium, consisting of the tissues that support the tooth, including the gums, the cementum, the alveolar bone as well as the periodontal ligament.

What is periodontal disease?

The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the inflammation in the gums. The gums become red, swollen and often bleed. Dentists mention that this disease is reversible when identified and treated early on.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a more serious inflammation. It affects the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. It results in the gums pulling away from the tooth and the loss of the supporting bone around it. Teeth become loose and patients have persistent bad breath. The Centre dentaire de la gare warns you that if not treated, the teeth may fall out.

Preventing periodontal disease

To prevent, find and treat bacterial or parasite infections causing periodontal disease, it is important to visit your dentist regularly. Failing doing so may lead to gingivitis which can turn into periodontitis.

If you notice inflammation in your gums or bleeding when you brush your teeth, be careful! These signs are associated to gingivitis. Your dentist at the Centre dentaire de la gare will guide you to the treatment that meets your needs. Do not hesitate and contact us.
