On the day of the oral surgery

  • Use gauzes and keep them in your mouth for about 20 to 30 minutes while applying pressure. When necessary, replace the gauzes every 30 minutes.
  • Apply ice on the cheek regularly (20 minutes per hour).
  • When bleeding, take a lightly moistened gauze or tea bag and bite it for about twenty minutes.

To avoid after oral surgery

  • Rinse mouth or spit
  • Drink using a straw
  • Smoke
  • Eat or drink hot foods or beverages: opt for cold and soft food
  • Pursue strenuous activities

What to do in case of pain after a minor oral surgery

  • During the first 24 to 72 hours, take medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, Atasol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), or even prescribed medications to ease your pain, but avoid taking aspirin.
  • After 48h, you can rinse your mouth three times a day with warm water and salt (2 ml or 1/2 tsp of salt in 250 ml or 1 cup of water) until complete recovery.
  • You might notice bruises on your skin. They will gradually disappear within 5 to 7 days.
  • It may also be difficult for you to open your mouth. Discomfort will go away within 4 to 5 days.
  • If pain intensifies after three days, do not hesitate, and call the clinic.

You will feel better after a few days and will be allowed to resume your regular activities. If pain, severe bleeding, swelling for two to three days or a reaction to a prescribed medication arise, please contact our dentists or hygienists promptly.
