Recommandations

First, it is important to know that milk, infant formula, and fruit juice ALL contain sugar.  Children therefore usually get tooth decay when they fall asleep while bottle-fed (except when water-filled).

It is therefore recommended to stop feeding milk to the babies before they fall asleep. Of course, it might take a certain adjustment period before the baby gets used to a new routine.  To smoothe the transition, please follow the procedure below.

Procedure:

Fill the bottle with water only. If your baby refuses the bottle, try giving him a clean pacifier, a stuffed toy, or a blanket. If your baby starts crying, do not give up the new routine: comfort him and try again. If the above recommendations do not lead to any satisfying result, try to gradually mix the milk with water until the bottle is entirely filled with water.

This type of decay can develop until the child reaches 4 years old. It is important to watch your child’s teeth every month. Beware of spots or lines on the teeth near the gums. Beware also of teeth with a dark coloration. If you notice one of those signs, visit your dentist immediately. Young children’s tooth decay must be handled quickly, otherwise your child could suffer and it could lead to serious infections.
